HOW IT WORKS

Understanding Cancer Tumour Markers

What are Tumour Markers?

Tumour markers are substances produced by cancer cells or by the body in response to cancer. They are used to detect cancer (not to confirm the diagnosis), predict therapeutic responses, monitor treatment efficacy, and screen for disease recurrence.

What It Tests For

There are many Tumour Markers, and samples include blood, urine, and body tissues. Examples of Tumour Markers include, but are not limited to Carcinoembryonic Antigen (Colorectal cancer), Prostate Specific Antigen (Prostate cancer), and CA 15-3 (Breast cancer).

Frequently Asked Questions

Testing is half of the puzzle; interpretation and assessment complete your health picture.

What are Tumour Markers?

Tumour markers are substances (often proteins) found in blood, urine, or tissue that can increase when certain cancers are present or active.

What are Tumour Markers used for?

They are primarily used to monitor treatment response, track for recurrence, and assess cancer activity over time rather than to diagnose cancer on their own.

Who should consider Tumour Marker testing?

Patients undergoing cancer treatment, those in remission requiring surveillance, or individuals with high-risk histories may benefit from regular monitoring.

How often are Tumour Markers tested?

Frequency varies with the diagnosis and treatment plan, but monitoring typically occurs every few weeks to several months to track trends rather than single values.
