Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Testing

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Testing is a simple, non-invasive test to assess and diagnose an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestines.

HOW IT WORKS

Understanding SIBO Testing

What is SIBO Testing?

SIBO Testing is an at-home, non-invasive breath test to evaluate the bacterial environment of the small intestine. The test involves multiple samples of exhaled breath into small vials (conducted with the take-home kit) after a sugar solution is consumed.

The findings include whether the bacteria are present, in what amounts, and whether they produce methane or hydrogen.

What It Tests For

Bacteria are typically present in tiny amounts in the small intestine. They are kept at this low level by the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC), peristalsis, bile, pancreatic enzymes, and exposure to stomach acid and enzymes mixed with food particulates.

Bacteria in larger amounts inhabit the large intestine, and if digestion is not optimal, they can grow in the small intestine, causing a variety of symptoms. This test ensures accurate assessment of the small intestine environment to target therapy to SIBO (if positive) or rule it out (if negative).

BENEFITS

Who It’s For

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Testing is half of the puzzle; interpretation and assessment complete your health picture.

Why would I need SIBO testing?

It’s recommended for individuals with bloating, abdominal pain, IBS symptoms, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, reflux, or unexplained food intolerances.

How do I prepare for the SIBO test?

Patients typically follow a restricted diet for 24 hours, avoid certain medications/supplements, and fast for 12 hours before the test. Specific instructions vary by lab, and you will receive a clear, concise outline before starting the test.

Can medication or supplementation affect my results?

Yes. Antibiotics, probiotics, motility agents, and fibre supplements can alter gas production and should often be paused before testing (you should always discuss changes to supplements or medication with your Naturopathic Doctor).

How accurate is SIBO testing?

While not perfect, breath testing is the most widely validated noninvasive method for diagnosing SIBO and is highly useful when combined with symptoms and a comprehensive health history.
