Curcumin Therapy
Curcumin is the active molecule in turmeric and has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties.
HOW IT WORKS
Understanding Curcumin Therapy
What is Curcumin Therapy?
Curcumin is the main polyphenol (anti-oxidant) in Turmeric. It is extracted from the rhizome of the plant and has relatively poor bioavailability when administered orally.
At Radiant Health & Wellness, our Naturopathic Doctors understand that synergistic compounds can improve Curcumin’s oral bioavailability as well as understand its potential intravenous preparations which bypass the gastrointestinal tract altogether.
How Curcumin Therapy Works
Curcumin influences a broad range of processes in the body contributing to its large mechanism of action. It acts generally to decrease inflammation and cellular oxidative damage. Additionally, it has been studied in the context of immune system modulation, (improving low functioning immune function and decreasing an overreacting immune function).
Curcumin has also been studied in the context of tumorogenesis as it can have inhibitory effects on NF-kB and the proto-oncogene mTOR.
Our Approach
Our clinic provides access to discussions about integrative modalities such as Curcumin. When appropriate, these therapies may be explored in collaboration with each patient’s care team.
We do not claim Curcumin is a treatment or cure for any disease. Instead, our role is to educate, inform, and support patients who wish to understand the range of integrative approaches that are being studied internationally and used in an integrative setting to best achieve their health goals.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Many patients are curious about Curcumin Therapy as an integrative option to their care. Explore the top five most asked questions.
How well is Curcumin absorbed by the body?
On its own, Curcumin has relatively poor bioavailability. However, when combined with other compounds, such as black pepper extract (or infused intravenously), Curcumin absorption is significantly increased.
Does Curcumin interact with any medication?
Yes, Curcumin may interact with blood thinners, diabetes medications, and certain chemotherapy drugs. It is important to consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting any new supplementation, such as Curcumin.
Can I get enough Curcumin just from eating Turmeric?
Turmeric contains only 2-8% Curcumin by weight, so to achieve a therapeutic dose, you would need to consume a large amount of turmeric powder. At these high doses, digestive side effects are more likely.
What are the side effects of Curcumin?
Curcumin can cause gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach upset, and acid reflux. This is especially pronounced when taking a large amount of turmeric powder.
Can I take Curcumin if I’m pregnant?
The safety of Curcumin supplementation during pregnancy is unknown. Please speak with a qualified health care professional before starting Curcumin Therapy if you are trying to conceive or are pregnant.
