Intravenous Nutrient Therapy

IV Nutrient Therapy and Injection (intramuscular, subcutaneous) Therapy are safe and effective ways to deliver vitamins and minerals directly into the circulatory system.

HOW IT WORKS

Understanding Intravenous Nutrient Therapy

What is Intravenous Nutrient Therapy?

Also known as “parenteral therapy,” substances administered IV or injected bypass the gastrointestinal tract, allowing for complete absorption of nutrients and obtaining a blood level of nutrients much higher than oral intake alone.

How IV Nutrient Therapy Works

IV nutrient therapy offers individuals experiencing compromised gastrointestinal absorption an alternative with enormous therapeutic value. In conditions such as cancer, irritable bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), IBS, and even the elderly with decreasing stomach acid, IV therapy allows for 100% absorption of nutrients, bypassing the gastrointestinal system and offering significant benefit over oral administration.

Not only does this form allow for complete absorption, but it also enables rapid administration of higher concentrations of medicines that may not be achieved with oral supplementation.

Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections of nutrients also allow for increased absorption; however, the skin and the muscle act as a time-release mechanism, slowing the absorption of nutrients over a longer period than intravenous administration.

Our Approach

Our clinic provides access to discussions about integrative modalities such as Intravenous Nutrient Therapy. When appropriate, these therapies may be explored in collaboration with each patient’s care team.

We do not claim that Intravenous Nutrient Therapy is a treatment or cure for any disease. Instead, our role is to educate, inform, and support patients who wish to understand the range of integrative approaches being studied internationally and used in an integrative setting to achieve their health goals.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Many patients are curious about Intravenous Nutrient Therapy as an integrative option to their care. Explore the top five most asked questions.

Can’t I just take oral supplementation?

To reach the circulatory system, oral supplementation must pass through the digestive system and the liver (first pass metabolism). This decreases the total blood concentration of that supplement, whereas IV Nutrient Therapy delivers 100% to your circulation.

Which nutrients can I receive from an IV?

Typically, IV Nutrient Therapy involves vitamin C, most B vitamins (Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12), minerals such as zinc, magnesium, and calcium, and amino acids. Depending on your needs, we can customize IV Nutrient Therapy with many other nutrients.

Is IV Nutrient Therapy safe?

When administered by trained professionals in a clinical setting, IV Nutrient Therapy is generally safe. Some nutrients may interact with medications, worsen diagnoses, or cause allergic reactions. It is important to discuss these therapies with a qualified healthcare professional.

What does a treatment session look like?

A small IV line is placed in a vein, and the nutrients are infused slowly over 30-90 minutes. At Radiant Health & Wellness, our clinicians practice standard aseptic technique and meet (or exceed) all of Health Canada intravenous guidelines.

What should I do before and after a session?

It’s best to arrive well hydrated and to have eaten a light meal beforehand (unless otherwise told by your healthcare practitioner). Afterwards, you can resume your normal activities. However, we typically recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and swimming or bathing for 24 hours.
