Botanical Medicine
The use of herbal substances to elicit specific actions within the body.
HOW IT WORKS
Understanding Botanical Medicine
What is Botanical Medicine?
Botanical medicine involves extracting specific substances from precise plant parts (ie. seeds, berries, roots, leaves, flowers..etc.) and using them to elicit actions in the body. Depending on the type of plant, different extraction methods are required to optimize medicinal potency.
Common forms of botanical medicine involve tinctures, powders, pills, or ointments (topical preparations).
Our Naturopathic Doctors will help you navigate potential botanical interactions with your current medication use.
How Botanical Medicine Works
When botanical substances enter the body they elicit a desired effect through many biochemical pathways. They have been extensively studied and implemented to mimic hormones, act at cellular receptor sites, change nervous system pathways, alter blood flow, and affect many other processes in the body.
Almost 1/4 of pharmaceutical drugs are derived from botanicals.
