ATRIAL FIBRILLATION “Afib”

Atrial fibrillation is the most common irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) and is due to an electrical signal disturbance in the heart. This disturbance can lead to a fast heart beat (tachycardia) which can disrupt blood flow and can result in a higher than normal risk for clot formation, stroke, or heart failure.

In Canada, approximately 20% of ischemic strokes can be attributed to Afib

“Most patients go on to lead good quality lives. Don’t be scared. Afib is a problem, but it is treatable and controllable. “ – Dr. Paul Dorian, Cardiologist (St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto)
